I am a lecturer in the Department of Computer Science in the University of York.

Research

My current research interests are in radionavigation, especially the development of novel digital signal processing algorithms for (previously) Decca Navigator and (currently) Loran-C. I shall be happy to supervise research students in this, or a related, area.

In the past I have also worked on:

• the implementation of programming languages, in particular Occam and Algol 68;
• parallel processing techniques;
• algorithms for text formatting;
• parsing van Wijngaarden grammars, and the applications of VWGs in natural language processing;
• formalisms for describing natural languages, especially developments of GPSG, such as G²PSG.

Web Resources

I am an enthusiastic user of the Web for teaching and research. Here are some of my own web pages.

• I have a number of interactive web-based packages for designing various types of filter:   there's one for digital filters, another for analogue (LC) filters, and one for digital phase-locked loops.

• I am developing a web-based interactive tool for teaching circuit design & analysis, which I have used to support a first-year course in Linear Circuit Design.

• Here's a manual page and source code for my fax modem software, which makes an SGI Indy workstation behave like a fax machine or a modem.

• I have a few other software packages which are freely available for down-loading via the WWW.

• I have a page of geodesy links; if you want to find out about map projections, coordinate transformations, or how far it is from A to B, this page will tell you how (or at least where to look).

I try to use the Web wherever practicable to make tedious admin. jobs less irksome. Unfortunately, work continues to expand to fill the time available [Parkinson].

Other Interests

I have a long-standing interest in telephones.

My other interests are mainly musical: I play the oboe in, and until June 1999 I was the Secretary of, the York Symphony Orchestra, which is one of the oldest amateur orchestras in the United Kingdom. We celebrated our centenary in June 1999.
