EETimes reports that Atmel will report a loss this quarter, and will
cut their capital budget 37% (400 to 250 million dollars) for 1998.
I wonder what that will do to the AVR chips, which aren't well entrenched
in the hearts of the market yet :-(

Yeah, Atmel's not doing real well. Their stock was in the $40
range a few months ago, and it's been steadily dropping... Today
it's at 16-5/8, and the company has just announced its intention
to buy back 5 million shares (in addition to the 5 million they
bought two years ago).
Microchip's stock is also doing pretty poorly, although not
quite as badly as Atmel's... From $45 or so in October,
Microchip stock has dropped to about $25.
