I have found plenty of code to decode the signal from a sony remote
control, but there isn't much in the way of encoding the sony remote
control data out there... does anyone know where I could find code to do
this?  If not, I will probably just start from scratch and work on writing
some.  Thanks in advance.

Where were you looking?  I've had code on my web site for over two years,
and it's listed in all the major search engines:

http://www.brouhaha.com/~eric/pic/controls.html

Thanks... I've searched, but not quite for the right words to get your site
:(.

I investigated remotes myself. Most web references end up at
http://falcon.arts.cornell.edu/~dnegro/IR/
which is a reasonable start. Once you have a rough idea
how they work, it's best to verify things for yourself.

The tables often have errors. Once you write the binary
data bits you can see the patterns.

>From these I notice that some codes make more sense when
you consider them to be transmitted LSB first,
not MSB as shown in the tables or read off the scope.
Codes are not even always consistent within a company.
I think the tables were drawn up from taking just one
example handset, not all types from a company.

In short, gen up from the web but verify the remotes
you wish to emulate. And engage brain to see what
is going on!

I've managed to write scraps of PIC code to talk to
my Decca TV and Scientific Atlanta cable box.
My Sanyo VCR and Philips (RC5) music system are
not too complex either.
