Has anybody got suggestions about building/buying an inexpensive
computer to HPIB test equipment (RS232 to HPIB) interface?

This interface is also called GPIB or IEEE488 and is common on HP,
Tektronix, Anritsu, and other  test equipment and I want to control them
from my PC.

Hopefully I won't have to buy an IEEE488 bus card to insert into my PC.

Thanks for any help you can give!

It is possible, and we have done it before.

However, it would probably be more reasonable to purchase an IEEE card
as any conversion will not be 100% compatible in speed or operation.  There
are some high speed modes, and special triggering features that won't be
available with a home brew.   Also, any canned IEEE drivers may have trouble
communicating with it.

You should be able to buy a used one, if price is a factor, from a used
equip.
wholesaler for about $100 or less.

If it is a purely entertainment issue, I'll see if I can round up some old
code.

Nope, you don't have to.  See
http://www.iotech.com/catalog.html#ieeesupport (or the main page
http://www.iotech.com, go to "catalog" and "support, converter" page).  They
offer RS-232 to IEEE-488 converters and parallel port to IEEE-488
converters.  Other companies make them also, but I can't think of any names
right now.  The most recent full catalog from IO Tech that I have is from
1993.  The parallel converters were about $150 US, and the serial
converters were about $300 US.
