Hello!

I have a little problem with my picstart plus programmer..  I recently
owned a PII 300 Mhz computer, and since I have it, my programmer only
works approx 1 time out of 5 when I try to use it.  When it doesn't
work, it gives a message like "serial communication problem", but I
tried every IRQs, com1 to com4, etc etc, and nothing corrects then
problem!!

Anybody have any idea ??

Thanks!!
Simon

I had the same problem at first also.  If your mouse works, Try removing your
mouse (turn off the PC first) and hooking the Pic Start Plus up to your mouse
port.  Then try to enable the programmer.  If this works, then you know there
was a problem with the other comm ports you were trying to use.  This was my
problem.  I had to go to the Hardware Manager and remove and reinstall (using
Hardware Wizzard) my comm port to get it to work.

Good Luck

Anthony

Some years ago I had a problem similar to yours, a serial
driven Programmer didn4t work anymore. The problem came up
just when I switched from My older 386 to an 486.

The solution was to set the TIMEOUT register of the serial
communication-interface. Done this using a batch-file with
edlin and a DEBUG-script ( Debug is a ancient dos commandline debugger )
wich changed some Bytes in the BIOS Data-Area.
Sorry about dont remembering the registers. Possibly a good
PC-BIOS-Docu will help.

Kind regards

I also consistently have a problem using the ProMate out of MP
Lab running on a 486DX2-66 using WFW3.11.  It also gives a serial
communications error most of the time (it works sometimes).  I've just
gone back to using the DOS program to drive the ProMate.  Works every
time!

Microchip have released a new firmware, Ver 1.5.00 to go wiht the new MPLAB
ver 3.40. This deals with problems that occur on nice fast PC's and
picstart+'s. the soft ware and firmware are available free on the web you
just need a PIC17c44 to put it into. a windowed part would be good if you
can afford them. That save buying anew one next time. If your picstart+ is
less than a few months old go back to where you bought it from. They may
give you the special Microchip upgrade kit for recent purchases.

Hi,

a silly question: if you buy a windowed PIC17C44, and a new upgrade is
coming, how will you program that windowed PIC?

Hello!

Don't throw away the old OTP firmware, and keep the related MPLAB
version!
If Microchip change the firmware, you will able to programming with old
OTP
firmware chip (and the related MPLAB) the new firmware version in the
empty
windowed PIC17C44.

Happy upgrade!

If you keep the old firmware and a copy of the old software you should be
able to use the old stuff to program the new firmware.
