Hi-ho all,
I'm using a Parallax StampII for a prototype that will be communicating
serially with a remote PC approx. 300 ft. away.  I'm considering short-
haul modems; but from what I understand from the StampII manual, in lieu
of available (-) power the TX signal uses power from the RX line.  That
being the case, a passive short-haul modem wouldn't work would it?
(Since it would have to derive all its power needs from its "host"?)

Is my only other option to use self-powered short-haul modems?

Geez Bob, are you REALLY that old? (Does the nurse do your typing?)

Depending on your data rate, RS-485 should be OK.
75176s should be cheaper that a modem.

What are the power needs at the remote end?  Can't you run a
couple of wires for power along with the two communications lines?

Well, let's put it this way.  I have several kids older that most
of the readers of this list.  Yes I am REALLY that old - but I
feel like about 35.  I hope the nurse is not making any typos.

Bob, if they ever put you out to pasture, I'll be glad to join you
and `chew the hay'. I'm getting too old to `buck hay' though I can
still `stitch the bales' ;-)
