Hi All
Have you all seen the new products PDF on Mchips web site? I
Have and apart from being rather annoyed with a microchip rep for
telling me that microchip would NEVER do anything like the following-
Seen the PIC16F787 :-) For those that have not seen it yet 4096x14 Flash
128x8Ram 128x8EEprom timers capture PWM A-D USART BOR Gain Amplifier(?)
ICSP(?) 4xPhase Lock Loop(for performance inprovement ?) 2.5V
Ok it sounds good but i have been informed that we will have to wait for
18 Mths or so before we see samples :-(.

What are you annoyed by?  The vapourware aspects (raised to a high artform
by Microsoft <g>) or the product itself?  I'd say the vapour-products are
just a self-interest move to protect themselves against ATMEL AVR et al.
The comparison is disappointingly biased.  Do they really think we can't
compare data sheets for ourselves?
18 months is a long lead - I'd expect it to be wrong - and the specs to have
changed considerably by the time it gets here.

The 'Truth about the AVR' - button on the home page made me happy - very
happy. Mchip would not have put it there if they weren't  s**t-scared of
the
AVR. Hooray! At last! Microchip is moving again!

I had to see if the 'truth' was actually the truth, so I browsed Atmel's
site to see what their actual claims are. Mchip claimed a working
C-compiler
against an 'unknown' C-compiler for the AVR. Tsk! tsk! Microchip must
really
be concerned.

We were this close (->| |<-) to dumping Mchip in favour of a flash-based
micro, but the 16F877 changed that (if Mchip can deliver, that is).

Thinking back, didn't this list warn Microchip months ago that falling
behind
in the flash-arena will be suicide? Hmmm... I hope Mchip will keep an
ear to
the ground (or PIClist) in future.

Let's see if they can deliver...
