ok, someone needs to
figure out how to use a PIC to conntrol it now.... so we can all build
portable MP3 players.... with laptop hard drives of course.

Check out http://gussie.alaska.net/acplay/index.spml

They are using AVR's but I am sure it could be adapted for the PIC (i
think someone is working on it). There is supposed to be an update in the
next little while that will shed more light on the CD/ATAPI interface.

I am quite aware of grants project.
I have recived help from him in the past dealing with TI-calcul;ator
hardware,
his system used the AVR to access the CD/Hardrive, and scan keypads ect.
but it DOES use a dedicated MP3 ecoder chip.

I have a player in my car that uses a cd-rom
it is based around a PII 400 system though.
runs linux from a floppy decodes mp3s of the cd-rom
and playes through a SBawe 64 into an amp... then into my speakers...
It uses a pic to scan keypad, and display on LCD screen.
the LCD screen is also connected to the parallel port so that the
song can be shown on the LCD.

Sony has a beautiful car player with a color LCD display that displays the
song and all.  It talks to a 10 disk minidisk changer through some type of
serial cable.  Now - if you could make an MP3 player system emulate that 10
disk changer and talk to it with the Sony front end, that would be an
elegant solution!
