Greets,
Can MOVF using a 16c84 be used to move contents of one register to
another, or is it necessary to move to W register first?

thanks

You have to move to W first.

You have to move through W - on the 17Cxx chips you can move directly from
some registers to others, but not on the 16Cxx devices.

I think I write this as:

MOVF        A,w
MOVWF    B

Is MOVFW really a command in MPASM?

Yeah, it's a pseudo-op that MPASM translates to "MOVF reg,w".  It's
REAL easy to mistake it for "MOVWF", though, so my adcice is never
to use it, and -- because there's no way to disable MPASM's
acceptance of the pseudo-op -- to periodically scan your code for
accidental "MOVFW" commands.
