Hello everybody,
I am new user of PIC. I think PIC16F84 is a best selection to start. I
want
to interface 2-line LCD (for example Htachi-LM016L)to Pic16f84 but I
dont
know how to program it and what I need (ex. PICSTART?) and what will I
do.Besides, I have datasheet about LCD but I dont know its work.
I tried on 8085A, I know assembly and C programming basically.
Could you send me basic program (about LCD and PIC16f84)  or point me?
Thanks for your helps...

See my web-page for some example code for a C84 and a 2 line character
LCD (note - it was written for the C84, but only config bytes should
    need changing for the F84)

    http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/steve_lawther/charlcd.htm

The code is to test a LCD in 4 bit mode is connected and working
    correctly.

Oooh..a question I can answer:)
I am also a newbie to PICs, and  I looked around a bit before buying a
programmer.  I ended up downloading Microchips simulator and assembler
from their webpage, and I purchased a programmer from MicroEngineering
Labs.  The service was really freindly and they got my programmer sent out
the same day.  I got a bare board for 35 dollars, and spent another 10 or
so on the chips.  I also got a ZIF socket from DigiKey for 8.
I think their webpage is http://www.melabs.com or something.  I saw them in the
current issue of Nuts and Volts on the first few pages.
