'General question...'

Hi all!
Well, I guess this is my third (or perhaps fourth) week in the world of
PIC's. So far I've learnt alot about the 16x84 chip. I built the "in
circuit programmer", with a handful of components, and downloaded the
free MPASM and PICUP.
What I'm curious about now is: are there any other PIC's that could be
programmed as easy using freeware stuff?! Or is the 16x84 just a teaser?
The old "first one is for free but when you want more you have to pay
for it"-stunt?

Regards,
Johnny

Tony Nixon posted [to the PICList] that he was able to write a boot loader
for the '877 including a PC program to write code out to the PIC which would
then write it to FLASH and run it. It dawned on me that a '877 preprogrammed
with this boot loader was a $5 development environment when combined with
the free       MPLAB software and a few bench tools. Just a cable from the
PC to the (pre programmed) '877 and the pic programs itself.

Note that Hi-Tech also have a 16F87X bootloader available (in C of course!).
Have a look at http://www.htsoft.com/
