Hi Shawn

DIP = Dual Inline Package (Thru-hole IC)
SOIC = Small Outline Integrated Circuit (Surface mount IC)

DIP is a through hole device - pins stick through the printed circuit
board.

SOIC  is a surface mount part. Pins lie flush with the top of printed
circuit board, and do not protrude through.

Thanks Randie.
So if I have an 8 pin 12c508 that I need to be inserted into an 8 pin IC
socket, SOIC would be the way to go?

Hi Shawn,

If you want to use a socket, then DIP is the package you want.  I think
they do make SOIC sockets but they may be hard to find and very expensive.

Surface mount ICs are not meant to be inserted and pulled out of sockets
very much.  With the pins being quite thin, they are very delicate.
Surface mount components are meant to be soldered directly to the PCB.

Besides, if you're just playing around with the 12c508, I assume you
will want the UV erasable part which only comes in the DIP version.

Hope this helps!

NO!
IC sockets are (normally) for DIP:s.
(Pins sholud stick down in it)

The SOIC has dimensions *halved* in all three dimension (1/8 of volume!),
so it is very tiny in comparision and the tiny pins just down to PCB
surface, then out.

The DIP (or DIL) has pins on 1/10" spacings each side sticking thru PCB or
into socket.

There are also SSOP etc even tinyer then SOIC.
