I"ve heard that adapters exist for picstart plus programmer but I did not find
informations about them on Microchip www.

Adapter for what? AFAIK, the Picstart+ will program all the PICs with no
adapter needed...that's part of why I bought it.

It will not program SMT chips withoout an adapter, which is not available.

It is not easily configured for programming in-circuit either.

Funny you should mention that, I was going to ask the list:

It's fairly easy to wire up something like this, right? My thought was to
get an appropriate chip socket and solder the 5 required wires to the
top, then plug the socket into the programmer, and use it that way for
in-circuit programming. Any problems with this approach, or are there
better ways anyone knows of?

Are the adapters just straight pin to pin (by function, not number), or
