'[PIC] RS232 beginner'

I am trying to learn PIC programming and decided to buy the pickit2 starter
kit from microchip
(http://www.ptitrain.com/electronique/microp/docs_en_vrac/DS51556_lowPinCountUserGuide.pdf).
I was wondering if it would be possible to add an rs232 connection to this
board. Would I be able to use one of the ttl to RS232 converters that are on
ebay? The board comes with a 14 pin expansion header. Thanks

If they are along the lines of the ones shown at:
www.dontronics-shop.com/RLC-1-RS232-to-5-Volt-Level-converter-p-16186.html
yes they should work fine. Just line the signals up correctly.

Cheers Don...

You will also find a truly amazing amount of information about RS232
interfaces at
http://www.piclist.com/techref/io/serial/rs232.htm And specifically about
PIC RS232 interfaces at
http://www.piclist.com/techref/microchip/rs232.htm

It should be noted that the same unit Don suggests is available in the USA
for a few dollars less.

http://www.piclist.com/techref/io/serial/RCL1.htm

And proceeds help to support the piclist.com WEB site. If you live outside
the USA, Dons price is better.

With a price only one dollar less than the RLC-1, Olins' unit is larger, has
no case, no cable, does not convert RTS or DTS, and does not support 3.3v
operation. All of which would seem to indicate the RLC-1 is a better buy. On
the other hand, his 5 unit price is $13.80 which I can't begin to hit.

http://www.piclist.com/techref/io/serial/RCL1.htm the bottom of the page
contains a comprehensive list of RS232 to TTL converters. Including links to
Olins product, the Dontronics version of the RLC-1 (better shipping outside
the USA) and a kit for $14 from Al Williams for those with more time and
less money.

Have we covered all the bases on where you can buy an RS232 to TTL
converter? I'd just as soon stop going on about this. If you have another
converter you want to sell, just please add a link to the RLC-1 web page or
the page on the subject at piclist.com:

http://www.piclist.com/techref/io/serial/ttl-rs232.htm

Use the form at the bottom. You don't need my permission.

I have an RS232 to TTL level converter using a Hex Inverter and a
couple of resistors and a diode  I whipped together quick and dirty
for Arduino work only to find a lot of other uses for it. I had a
production run done and sell them on my website as a kit for  $3 (the
P3 unit has Rx and Tx only) and $4 (the P4 unit has Rx, Tx, and DTR)
each. I have blasted 115KBaud from an ATmega168 UART to a PC and not
dropped a byte so it holds up there. Its not fancy, but it works ....

Up to this point I have never really advertised it much, but have
sold quite  a few anyway. I also sell the bare pcb's for $1-2 each
