I fixed my own, it's a couple of cheap output buffers that nearly always fail (they are a 74' series part but can't remember full part of the top of my head). However you can send them back to Microchip who will fix them for you (actualy, you just get sent an ICD2 from their pile of fixed ones so turn around should be pretty quick).

I believe if you just call Microchip and tell them yours is dead they will
send you a new one at no charge.

Bob,
If you need any 74 series parts let me know! I have a few cabinets of
'em in my workshop here... ;)

Why does the component die? Bad wiring?

I live in a dry, warm area. Lots of static electricity. That's probably
what happened.

ICD2 and PICkit 2 are both a bit fragile. I will think this has
less to do with QC but more with the design. The design does
not handle user error well enough.
Still they are designed as a development programmer anyway.

Xiaofan,
That is why I like ZIF sockets :) Can you
recommend any good book for basic RF theory. The
current book I am reading does not seem to cover RF
basics well enough.
Thanks,
john
PS: I build my ICD2 clone partly b'cos I can repair
any damage to the ICD2 clone during development.

You can use ZIF socket with PICkit 2 and ICD2. I am actually
using a universal adapter with PICkit 2 and ICD2 at home.
Regards,
Xiaofan
PS: Sorry I am not familiar with RF.

Microchip is quite good at supporting their tools. They are still supporting
our Promate II I bought 6 years ago. Last time they simply replace the whole
unit.

Bob,
You're a registered Microchip Consultant, aren't you?
If so, contact Donna Mason and she'll get you fixed up PDQ.

Bob,
You must go to the support.microchip.com site and post a ticket
explaining the problem. If they consider that they have to give you a
replacement, they will tell you where to send it.

No, actually I'm not, because of an NDA conflict many years ago, but
that doesn't seem to be
exist now. I basically retired for health reasons, but the warm, dry,
dusty climate here is helping
me recover. My wife and are now deciding whether we want to get back
into the electronics
mess, let me write novels and short stories, or shoot craps & plan poker
professionally.
Craps and poker always made the most money in the past.

I know what you mean, in the past year I've probably earned at least
$-15000 working on electronics, mechanics and computers after expenses,
equipment, tuition and rent get all added up. I don't think I'd have the
nerve to lose money that fast any other way. ;)

Farming beets might be a good lurk if you want to
ride the bio-ethanol wave though

That joke probably outlived its useful time, with all the farming
subsidies... :)
