Hey all... I am using the HTSOFT PIC18 C compiler and need to write a little program to send and receive data to and from a PC through the serial port probably using HyperTerminal. I am fairly new to these chips and have purchased the PIC18F8720 with development board and I2C programmer. Can someone please help me? Either point me to an example or send one through please. I don't use a C compiler, so I can't help you directly. However, your compiler manufacturer might have examples on their website, and there is a fantastic code library at the http://www.piclist.com website. As I'm sure others will chime in, it may help you to write a few programs in assembly so as to better learn the functioning of the chip. Well, we don't know at this time if we should start with realy basic PIC-stuff (if you're a complete PIC beginner), or if it's just the serial stuff you have problems with. You must be *much* more specific in your questions when asking. What is it that doesn't work ? Any error messages ? What data sheets have you been reading ? Well, the first hurdle is clock speed. If you are using a crystal such as 18.2 MHz that divides nicely to an even baud rate, you are in luck. If you are using a 10 MHz or 4 MHz crystal, your baud rate won't match precisely and you will get occasional errors. If you are using an RC oscillator, forget RS232 communications. You will, of course, need a serial output routine which you can find at Shane Tolme's site, http://www.microchipc.com/. The second hurdle is inverting the RS232 data. Your PIC will produce signals that are inverted from real RS232 levels. You will also need a MAX232 chip to invert the signals levels. Hyperterminal is not a great comms program, but we are all stuck with it now. And even less so if you are using any of the newer PICs with the 16 bit baudrate register (which I don't think that the target PIC in this case has).
