'[PIC]: Mid-range reference manual: required readin'

Another question from a beginner (hope I am not exhausting your collective
patience).

I'm beginning my PIC career (hobbyist) with  the 18F452 series, and have
taken seriously the advice of others on this list to thoroughly read the
data sheet.  Reading that, looking at some examples of code, and studying
some basic tutorials/howtos, I suppose I'm about at the point to begin
doing some smoke testing.   But I have seen some comments on here about how
valuable the mid-range reference manual is.  Is that something I should
read?  Or does it only pertain to the 16 series and below and would not be
pertinent to the 18 series?  (Wish they had a high-range manual :-)

Thanks, Joohn

There is here :
http://www.microchip.com/1010/suppdoc/refernce/index.htm

And it's a *reference* manual, maybe not ment to be read
cover to cover as the data sheets...

I quickly went there and looked.  They have an 18C reference manual.  Is that  the one you are referring to??

Ah, yes, you are right, it says 18C on the front page...
Well, I have not seen anything else.

This is problem that both ref manuals have, they are both
older than the newest PIC in each family.

I'v downloaded both ref manuals but not used them that much...

I use the midrange ref manual constantly.  If you really want to know how
Timer2 ticks (pun intended) that is the place to go, they leave out a lot
of detail in the regular data sheets.

Although there are a lot of new PICs, often the peripherals are just
rehashed from design to design.

<inside joke> P.S. See, Jan, I even trimmed my post to save bandwidth ;-)

The 18c family manual appears to have the same information (at least
for Timer2) as the midrange manual.

I suspect they just copy & paste the VHDL source code :)))))
