'[PIC]: Anyone familiar with the PicLite Programmer'
2001\10\16@155717 by Allen Mahurin

Hey all!  Well, I've taken the plunge into my first
PIC project, and while everythng seems fine in
simulation, I haven't been able to see it first hand.
I purchased a PicLite programmer from
http://www.worldwyde.com.  It wasn't *too* expensive, came
with a book of PIC info, was pre-assembled and tested
(supposedly), and listed a good range of compatible
micros.  It also came with software, but it's DOS
based, and doesn't seem to match what's described in
its documentation.  Hmmmm ...

Anyway, now that I'm trying to burn my first PIC, and
planned on showing this off to some people this
weekend, I can't get the programmer to work.  The
programmers "POWER" and "ACTIVE" indicators are lit,
but the software keeps telling me that no hardware is
connected.  The port (parallel) is fine, because I
just disconnected my printer to try out the programmer
(and confirmed that the printer still works on the
port when I remove the programmer).

Has anyone ever used this with any luck (or problems)?
Or does anyone know of any revised software that
works with this programmer?  I've contacted their
customer service through e-mail with no response.
Like I said, I'm coming up on a deadline and would
like to know if my work (programming and building the
prototype) have paid off.

Thanks again,

ATM

Hello Allen,

I haven't used the PicLite, but suggest you check the printer type in
your computer's BIOS/CMOS settings.  If it's set to "standard", you
get fewer status signals back from the printer. Try setting it to "ECP"
or "EPP" mode.

Good luck,

Neal Robles

Allen,
I have a very similar programmer to the PICLite ... very cheap .... but
they do work well if you don't mind not having a ZIF socket (which I don't).

There are two reasons that I have experienced that error message:
   - Parallel port type set incorrectly (have a play ... not sure which
works ...)
   - No PIC in the programmer
   - PIC is in backwards (oops on my part ... blown a couple like this :-)

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Jonathan

Oops ... sorry about that.  My response went just to
Jonathan.  But as I explained, I wanted to thank
everyone for their suggestions.  I've changed the port
settings and tried powering the unit before/after
installing the PIC.  Nothing has worked so far.  My
next step is to try another IC (in case I blew this
one).

IF that doesn't work, I may try building the NOPPP or
El Cheapo.  I just hate to build in a rush, and
potentially screw something up myself ... which is why
I paid for a pre-assembled and tested programmer.  My
guess is that the programmer works, but something is
keeping the software from seeing it.

If I happen to get it working, I'll let y'all know
what it took.

Thanks again,

ATM

I took Michael's suggestion and downloaded the generic
parallel programmer software (check the previous
reply).  Everything seems to work and respond properly
nutil I try to program my 16F84.  After programming,
it verifies the code, and ALWAYS gives me:

Verify failed at address 000h

This has to do with the interupt register, right?  The
message board for this software has SEVERAL messages
about this error, but none of the responses are in
English.  Can anyone tell me if this is unique to the
programmer, or is there something I can put in the
code to eliminate this problem (is a 000h address
error program related)?

Thanks,

ATM

Maybe it is a stupid suggestion ... but I thought of
it as well, so does that make me ...   ;)

Seriously though, I've tried two pics, but haven't
swapped in the last few attempts.  I'll try another
one today.

Thanks,

ATM

Just wanted to give y'all an update.  Both PICs were
good ... as proven by my NoPPP programmer.  Pretty sad
to blow $60 bucks on a programmer and book (book was
about useless too), when I built the NoPPP in two days
(lunch breaks) and it works!

Oh well.  Thanks for the all advice guys (and/or
gals). I may try to trouble shoot the first programmer
sometime.  Now, I need to get back to my program,
which I finally get to see has some bugs.  :(

Thanks again,

ATM
