SOME companies, on the other hand, seem to have completely
missed this point.  A month or so ago, the postman delivered an
unsolicited, free copy of the 5-volume EEM directory, which
weighs about twenty pounds... In the box was an offer from the
publisher for the whole thing on CD-ROM -- for $35!

I declined, of course... Although if the initially-shipped free
version had been on CD-ROM, I might've paid $35 to get it on
   paper.

You ever try the CD ROM version? Its not even worth $0.35! A really bad
search engine, FAX quality scanned pages, slow as I don't know what. I
had our library here buy a copy one year (emphasis on one year). I find
the printed EEM to be very useful. I don't know if they've improved the
CD ROM, but I'm not willing to go through the trouble to justify to my
boss why I need to go through the trouble of having it ordered again.

I, on the other hand, called up and spoke to the publisher when it arrived.
I explained to him that I do NOT use a paper copy of data books and such
as he was publishing if the material was available on CD, and that the
$230+/- price on his CD was out of line.  I have received these unsolicited
mailings every year, and have several years of them (in the original
cartons, only opened to see if maybe a CD was somehow included) piled in my
garage waiting to be remembered on recycling day.

After I explained how I rely on Acrobat and HTML for data, he and I worked
out an agreement that is suitable for both of us.  He promised that he
_would_ consider changing things around if there was sufficient need.

Sure, sometimes a book is nice.  But I really like to find what I want by
pressing Ctrl-F and waiting a couple seconds.  So much nicer than flipping
through the books to find the right page.
