Does anyone know how much it costs to get small membrane keypads custom
made in small quantities?  Are there companies that can do them for a
few bucks a piece in runs around a hundred or two or is this more like a
5,000 minimum piece proposition?  If they can be gotten in small
quantities any suggested sources?

I use to produce those. Quantity is not the biggest price factor.
Tooling has a fixed price and counts for the final unit price.  Last
time, I produced a 4 color label, custom made 24 keys (domes), 5 inches
cable, 12 pins connector, cost me $1400 for tooling plus $6 a piece
(label and switches) for 500 units, total around $4500 if I remember
well, almost $10 a piece total cost.  They made a horrible job, domes
got loose inside the housing space, rotate, shifted, they needed to redo
it all, they said guilty was a lot of 3M adhesive film... yeah, well.

Right now I am changing substantially for rubber pad keyboards... less
space, less connectors (directly to the PCB), only problem still those
arrogant producers that don't give you much attention when you talk in
quantities less than 30 thousand units... unfortunatelly.  I would
accept to buy regular rubber pads they use at phones, cell phones,
calculators, anything, they already produce it at zillion quantities, I
don't care, just sell me anything, I can cut whatever I want, I can wipe
off the text over it, charge me $5 a piece for 50 units, but no, "we
don't do that, we are masters of the universe, and you (small consumer)
go back to play with your little truck"... idiots.

Oh Wagner, it would appear that for once you work on the wrong side of the
world. Silicone rubber keypads can be made in small numbers, the cost is a
bit over the top. However it you want to use an exitsing one, then there are
some (Many) companies in Chinna and Korea (We will copy anything patenteded
or not is our motto) will do this. Also in Japan there are many surplus
shops that sell this sort of stuff, but whom knows for how long a particular
item will be around for in this case

Brian, around here (South Africa) you would be looking at origination of
around $250, and then in large quantities (300), you end up paying $2 to $6
per unit (depending on number of keys, led cutouts etc.).

Is the problem the layout/key size of the keypads, or the labelling?

If it is the latter, RS (rshttp://www.com) do 4x4, 4x3, 4x1 keypads where
you can add your own legend sheets (or pick them from the supplied legends).
Cost for 10-99 qty is £10.36, £10.18, £8.81 for each size. (OK, around $16
to $13)

I don't know if you have contact with some of those companies, by any
chance how can I contact them?
Thank you.

How about those metal domes, which in conjunction with a PC board make
switches, and if covered with (custom printed)  labels, make a custom
keypad arrangement?  It's not as nice as the silicone keypads, but it'd
be much easier and cheaper to prototype and manufacture.

Anyone know of a source for membrane keypads with custom
graphic overlays, decent pricing, that will do quick turn prototypes?

I have not tried them personally but you may want to try Silwalker.  They do
custom work and overlays
