Anyone know of software where I can use a dedicated computer to serve as a
printer buffer where the dedicated computer interfaces between LPT1 and a
parallel printer?

Thanks

Carl,

I recently bought an embedded computer (486SX) from TIMELINE
electronics.  It has a parallel port, 3 serial ports, and a few
other ports that I am not sure how I would use them right now.
These were originally used in POS terminals.  The cost was only
$79.00 + Tax and Shipping.   A very nice unit.  Comes with a manual
that is about 1/4" thick.  Rather extensive from my point of view.
Should make a rather nice Print buffer.  Oh yes, it will handle up
to 32 Meg of memory, and has 1 ISA Half Card slot available.
I bought the one I have to put a logic analyzer card into so I
wouldn't have to tie up my main computer.

                                         Regards,

                                           Jim

There's not anything exactly such that I know of;

There are several other options of course.

Network 2+ machines together - Ethernet the info to a print server.
(The Timeline machine James mentions would work, possibly the EIO $50ish
machine would be cheaper though.

Buy a hardware print buffer (I find these on eBay occasionally - could
give you a few brand names to hunt for.)

Print to a file, pass the file to another computer.

I assume that you somehow want to capture the output file and cannot DO
that, though?  Darn, KNOW I saw this somewhere but don't recall where,
someone had a little LPT port widget that'd let you capture it all...
