I have mixed feeling about off-topic posts, but IMHO _any_ kind of
discussion is appropriate for [OT] as long as it's conducted according to
the accepted rules (written and unwritten).

So far, this thread has not turned into a flame war, is being conducted in a
reasonably polite and calm manner, and is not a two-way conversation.
PicList has many topics which are of little interest to me, but I learned to
filter them out. Instead of trying to limit other people's freedom of
expression, just mark the whole thread as "read" and move on.

Note that I did not say it was not allowed. I just said that it would be
for the good of the list if this discussion was taken elsewhere. Just
like everyone is entitled to their opinion on nuclear power and is
entitled to express that opinion, I feel entiteld to express this
opinion of mine. Me not reading the discussion doesn't help in any way:
it is not the discussion or the opinions that I dislike but what it can
lead to in the end (which will come whether I read the posts or not).

Note that I said "appropriate", rather than "allowed".

I agree with your statement regarding opinions (everyone is entitled to
one). And my opinion is, the implication that a discussion on a
controversial topic is a waste of time, allegedly because the participants
will retain their original views, is wrong. Some of the discussions on this
list prompted me to do further research, and on a couple of occasions,
change my views. I'm sure it's the same for other people as well.

However, this is becoming a two-way conversation, so you can have the last
word. I reserve the right to reply offline. :-)

I like them, even when they are controversial, because the PIClist has
some very VERY bright people
on it. New ideas are always welcome, even when they are wrong <g> !

^ The opinions and research applied to [OT] on this list is so much
better than anywhere else.
