[Eagle] Where can I specify the trace width the autorouter will use? It
does not seem to use the default width (the one that is used when I draw
a trace manually), and I don't see a setting in the autorouter
configuration.

Edit / netclasses

You can specify which classes get each width and spacing, but it's always been an annoyance that every piece of trace connected to the same signal has to be the same netclass and gets routed in the same size. (so large power traces with smaller branches to individual chips must be done by hand)

Create a separate class for each type of trace, then attach the class you
want to each net.  See HELP CLASS.

A simple way to have it use a single trace width for everything is to
set the min trace width in the design rules.  In the DRC settings, go to
"sizes" tab, then set the minimum width.  The autorouter always
complies with the DRC minimums.  You could set this to 10, say, do
autoroute, then set it back to 8 so if you manually routed at 8 you
won't get complaints when running the DRC on the board.

Also, if you want it to use smaller than default vias, set the minimum
drill.  I use 16mils.  But you also have to change the "restring" - go
to restring tab, and for vias, outer, I have 8mil minimum, 25%, 16mil
maximum.  This makes vias with 16mil drills, the smallest size that
doesn't require additional $ for pcb manufacturing.  And you can
(usually) fit a 30awg wire-wrap wire in the hole as well for fixing
design problems on prototypes later...

Hope it helps
J

Beware, though, Eagle sometimes doesn't do the Right Thing, so check the
results carefully.

I had one design that had some high-voltage traces, so I created a couple
of classes with larger clearance values. However, I found that in a few
instances, Eagle routed a low-voltage net too close to a high-voltage net
because it used the smaller clearance value instead of the worst-case
(largest) value among the two nets. I had to fix this manually.

IIRC, a post-route manual DRC pass showed the problem, so just don't
rely on the autorouter alone.

One good solution is to go with one width (after you've routed power
supplies and/or power route/plan manually) let the router to do all
bulshits and then correct
manually the mistakes and route widts.
Don't try this for mixed designs, you'll be dissapointed even if using
restricted areas.
