'[EE] DOG LCDs'
putting a shopping list together, including alphanumeric displays,
and noticed these LCDs from Mouser
They're new to me and look like good replacements for the usual
displays I'd buy, if appearance is an important consideration
Pro - the line and colour options are interesting, no metal frame, so
the glass can be closer to a front panel
Con - a little more expensive than standard LCDs, need a constant
source for the backlight, and don't have their own PCB

I was going to say, based on the first link another option to look at would be http://www.itrontft.com/tft/ which has been advertised a couple of times here in the UK, with a flyer that came with the Electronic Weekly magazine.
Depending on options, has a slot for a USB connection, SD card, full RS232 port, SPI, I2C keypad, and other bits. IIRC it has an on-board ARM to do the smarts, that you can program if need be.
