'[EE] 12v power supply source'

I am in need of a 12v 12amp Universal (100-240v 50-60Hz) desk top power
supply like you would use with a monitor or printer.  The smaller the
better but cost is (isn't it always) also an issue.

I have Googled and then I Googled some more, but I have had no luck
locating what I am looking for.

Any and all pointers would be gratefully appreciated.

Phil

Any reason you couldn't use a small computer power supply?  It's
probably your cheapest option available, though it's probably about
twice the size you're hoping for...

What about recycling a PC power supply? It's, IMHO, the cheapest (but
not smallest) solution, and it gives you a bonus +5V (and many more
amps than required)

Take a look at ALL Electronics. They have great prices and exactly that
kinda thing.
Otherwise, look at WWW.JAMECO.COM ; they sell high quality new ones at a
good
price.

Google for All Electronics. I buy a LOT of onesie twosies there.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that it will eventually be used in a
product, so a "clean" solution is best.

Something based on PC power supply with suitable adaptation is
probably hard to beat on price. Second hand even more so.

12v output may not make as much as you want. 5V may be able to be
brought up to 12v with playing (or some more windings)(or a simple
enough output transformer.) 5V supply needs a residual load. 12V
supply doesn't regulate without a 5v load.

If this is a one off then an output transformer based on the coil from
another supply may well suffice.

If you want small and ugly, consider a halogen lamp "electronic
ballast". These are typically in 100W and 50W ratings but can probably
get higher. They provide an AC output at switcher frequency. VERY
easily adapted to other voltages. Very small. Very cheap. Very nasty
:-). But designed to run all day every day forever.
