Hello guys:

Where do you all source the components for prototypes and mass production?
(Apart from Digikey, Farnell, Arrow, mouser)

Thanks,
Ismail

That depends on the company. Big companies have dedicated
(global) sourcing department/teams. Small companies normally
do not have dedicated sourcing teams.

Most companies will not go through Digikey/Farnell/RS/Mouser
for volume production. They are only for prototyping or very
low quantity production. Avnet/Arrow/Future/.. are big global
distributors. There are problems with these companies though.
Sometime the FAE know a bit of everything yet they really
know nothing about the product lines they carry.

You will have also local distributors. Sometimes you can also
direct do business with the manufacturers like Microchip.

Xiaofan

Thanks Xiaofan. I am particularly interested in small companies because I am
from one. We have FAE contacts but I am wondering what other ways are out
there.

It depends on how large you are.
Arrow/Avnet/Future/etc.
Direct
Don't forget most will work with you on yearly blanket purchase giving you better buying power.

I have a very small company and source from SE Asia as well.
(made contacts when I was doing manufacturing in SE Asia)

Doing plastic injection mold & folded metal boxes is much cheaper in SE Asia at any quantity
compared to USA. (even after import duty and shipping)

ICs are mostly cheaper in USA
Connectors are cheaper in SE Asia Ray

In my country (netherlands) Nedis is is good, quick and very cheap
supplier. I think they are present in more countries. Unfortuntaely they
are more focused on supplying the average washingmachine or TV shop, but
they still have a decent range of components.

My second choice is Reichelt (Germany), DigiKey is third. For PICs
Microchip direct.

When I need one or two pieces of a component, and/or I need them *quick*
farnell will do the job, but their prices are often 2x ... 10x higher
than my 'best buy'.

Interesting findings. Quite some IC and electronics
components have this kind of pricing:
USA < SE Asia < China (too many level of distributors, majority of
ICs are imported).

Plastic componets / Metal casings /accessories:
USA > SE Asia >> China

The problem is the difficulties when sourcing from China for
small companies.

If you live in Hong Kong there are a million shops that are supplied from mainland China.
Will blow your mind.
Each country has a number of "official" suppliers and some gray market suppliers.

Like I purchase wall adapters from Surplus Traders in USA
U/L 12VA as cheap as $0.39.
Compare that to Digikey @ $9 each @ 100pcs.

You are right about generic IC.
But name brand sole supplier, microchip/freescale/national/etc.
are cheaper in USA with blanket purchasing.

True but China really wants huge quantities.

I like working with companies that are a little more expensive in production
but lower quantities, 1,000 pcs and low tooling cost.

Not too bad if you subscribe to many of the SE Asian sourcing magazines.
Global sources, etc.

It does help to meet some supplier face to face.
Always a better price/delivery.

RAY,

Good advice on Surplus Traders.  I just
bought 200 of the 13 VAC @ 800 Mils for
$0.39 Ea. and they had some 20,000 more.
Harry Krantz in NY is another good one.
I have a small Co. that does from 10 to
5,000 unit of  a kind and I get most
parts from
Surplus suppliers.  I have been in
business for over 50 years and there has
always been a supply on the surplus
market.
One more I bought some 5,000 +  10 watt
30 ohm resistors from Hosfelt
Electronics in Steubenville, OH. for
$0.05 ea..  I also have bought large
quantities of ICs and Passive parts on
ebay,  just know what you are doing when
you bid.

Derward,

I met Dan Derf (not his real name) of Derf Electronics back in
late 80's when I was going to SE Asia Electronic shows every October.

He was buying large quantities from some of my suppliers.
So some times I use him for some relays.

I even bought some Omron G5V relays from Singapore for half the price in USA
(2amp DPDT 12vdc) Dip spacing relays. (about $0.50)
Now buying dupes from Hong Kong at $0.25 each. (but I have to buy 2,500)

Have you tried Peter Parts? Sometimes good.

Purchased 0.24 ohm 5 watt cement resistors direct from Royal Ohm in Thailand
for $0.022 each at 2,000 pcs.

Never purchased from Ebay.
Have to look.
Thanks,
Ray
