I believe the issue here is the physical arrangement of the LED. Probably a
non-diffused unit in which you can easily see the two separate LED's in the
single package. You need a diffused unit.

Nah, never work.  The LEDs are fixed.

I guess I could try spinning the observer, though!  Then flashing red, yellow,
and green lights might be a precursor to something else.  Oh, wait, I won't need
the green because the observer will turn green...
