'[EE]: DVD repair'

Just a long shot.
I have been given a Sanyo DVD-SL25 to repair. Picture etc. is perfect
but there is no sound. I'm a bit suspicious that it has been disabled
somehow as I do get some clicks etc when changing chapters. But no
audio signal at all.

Does anyone know how to access the service mode on this item (or
possibly on any other recent Sanyo DVD player - may be similar).

Or any other ideas that would cause loss of audio but good picture?
I've tried all the relevant user settings so I'm now hoping for
something in the service settings.

Thanks,
Richard P

Did they have the volume up and blow the speakers? Or output
transistors. Some sets, when set for closed captioned mute the sound.

Hi Carl,

No, this is just a player, the outputs are low level audio (2V) that
drive a TV or separate audio system.

I've played with the subtitle options on the user setup menu but no
joy regardless of them being enabled or disabled.

I have really no idea - but I believe DVDs have several audio tracks,
according to each country. Is there a setting to select the channel on
the reproduces? Maybe it just got set to some weird language.

Also, some DVD reproduces have up to 5 speakers - do you have them all
checked? Aren't they switched?

Hi John,
I've tried different language options - the DVD I tried had english &
german soundtracks - no joy on either.

The on-screen menu appears to indicate that the output mode is set to
"5.1" mode. But there's only the two RCA audio output connectors.
(plus various video connections). There doesn't appear to be any way
of changing from the 5.1 format which is what started me thinking
about service mode options.

The user manual describes "5.1" as "A kind of audio" and that's it!

5.1 digital out comes out of the digital socket.
Try setup - digital out - and set to Dolby Digital: LPCM.
Not sure if when other digital modes in use the stereo phono output is inhibited.

Hi George
I've just checked & iy's already set to LPCM mode. Changing it to
Bitstream didn't help either for what it's worth!

I'd think that the audio stage or its PS had died except for the
slight blip in the speakers when I change chapters - presumably some
sort of mute function. That would indicate that at least part of the
audio chain is workin OK  - but, since the video side of things is
working fine I don't really imagine there's much going on between the
decoder and the mute switch.
I've just downloaded a service manual for a similar (I hope) model so
that might give me a few clues.

Try playing a CD. They don't have closed captioning and all that stuff to
begin with.

Have you tried playing a CD? That'll eliminate pretty much all "DVD
settings" questions.

Thanks, good idea,  I hadn't tried that. I'll have a go tonight.

There should also be an optical output and possible and RCA 'digital'
port (often orange colored).

Not something that service mode would affect.

Since you have audio mode set to 5.1, you will of course get
NO ANALOG audio.  PCM is also a digital mode.
You need to turn off digital audio modes to get analog out
on many DVD players. Is 'none' or 'off' an audio option?
Also check that you are using 'main' audio, not 'alternate' or 'foreign'.

The unit may have a volume function. If the volume
is set to zero you will of course also get nothing out.

It sounds to me like 'finger trouble' and that there is nothing wrong
with the hardware.

Hi Robert,
Thanks for your ideas.
I have been unable to find any way to turn the digital output off. The
only options are LPCM at 48 or 96kbit/sec or bitstream (IIRC - I'm at
work at the moment).

Similarly for the main - alt - foreign settings, there's no sign of
anything like that. But I could well have not yet found them.
No volume control either I can find, but again, I'll look again
tonight as there could be something I have yet to discover.

Yes, my first impression was that it was finger trouble - but I'm
rapidly starting to run out of fingers!!

Thanks for the input everyone. Keep it coming.

Hi,

Just out of curiosity - where did you find the service manual?

OK, I've tried playing a CD - still no sound. No volume control to be
located either.

>From the service manual I have located (for a different model), it
appears that there could be a separate DAC chip for the sound.
Obviously a prime candidate for investigation. It'll have to wait
until next week though.

Hi Ruben

http://www.eserviceinfo.com The DVD is a Sanyo DVD-SL25 and I found a
DVD-SL33 service manual. It doesn't actually have much more than parts
lists and schematics but it's a start. Someone has added pictures of
undressed ladies to the background also so it's a bit distracting to
try and sort out the details! Also it said I had to download multiple
rar files ( 6 x 2Meg) but I just ended up with 6 copies of the same
manual!

Just on the offchance anyone's interested.

The latest I have on this is that the audio DAC appears to have all
the signals going into it correctly (clocks, data  control) but
nothing coming out. The clocks have to be quite accurately related or
the chip auto-mutes but since they are generated from the same source
and appear to be OK (to 6 decimal places) I think it's unlikely to be
a problem.

So I'm trying to source a replacement WM8728 chip. Mouser have them
listed at $US2.50 but estimate that courier charges to NZ will be
$US40 !. And they'd be on backorder.

Local parts suppliers don't seem to have it listed but I've still got
a couple to try.

I've located another player of the same type for sale cheap locally -
but it appears to have the same problem. (If I can source the chips it
might be a fixer-up-er).

I've purchased a different type  of DVD (dead) on the remote chance it
uses the same chip but have yet to collect. Only cost $1 and includes
a remote so should be useful for parts  anyway. (Or may be fixable).

Any other ideas?

There is a link to icminer.com which lists some compatible parts.  Not
sure if they are a drop in replacement.  You might want to use google
translate for the page, which is why I didn't give a direct link.

Hi Alex,

Thanks for that link. The part is certainly listed there - as you say,
I'll have to get it translated.
