A few of the advantages I see are the following:

~4x the speed of a PIC for a given oscillator frequency
All AVR's can be programmed using the "Sample Programmer", a simple 5 wire
connection to the PC parallel port
'unlimited' stack depth on AVR's with onboard SRAM. The stack can expand to
fill the entire unused memory (not that I would recommend it!)

hmmmm, overflowing stacks...

Reminds me of my Nascom-1 days (1979)..
User RAM started at $0C80 and went up to $0FFF
Stack started at $0FFF and went down to $0C80  :(

More than once unfortunately....

In those days i found that each screen line was 64 bytes, but displayed only
48 chars wide, + 2 for the 0x00 borders left 14 bytes for code... less 3 for
the jump to the next line gap meant a whole extra 11 bytes for code per line
= 176 bytes total. added to the whole 895 bytes between $0c80 and $0fff that
was like well over a whole K for my programs. :)
Only problem was, if you wrote to the bottom right hand corner of the
displayable screen, the whole thing would scroll up. It made a big mess of
your program.
It all became ,much better when I saved up for two months to buy the 64k
(<-- K ) RAM card and made my own Nasbus interface for it..
I think there is still an old Nascom-1 in the attic of my old house - in the
original wooden framed case i made for it.
Z80 Nostalgia hmmmmmm.
Jim

Y'know what I say to that? "6502". :P
I started out with a Sinclair Spectrum +2A, then "upgraded" to a PC. Now I've
got a P-III/560 with 128MB RAM, a RISC PC... and an Acorn BBC Master 128. The
Master 128 is still my favourite :)

No, I still haven't got mine yet. Shame, really, I was going to build an MP3
player with MMC card functionality - the AVR looked perfect for the job. Oh
well...

Philip,

I was asking about ZILOG?s Test drive kit. But one hour after sending
the email, was receiving the kit. Very, very nice.
