'[AD]: 2x16 LCDs wanted'

I'm looking for a source for 2x16 or 2x20 alpha numeric "44780" LCDs. A
couple years ago searching google for "LCD displays" would have been
easy. Do you have a good, inexpensive, source you'd like to share?
Thanks

I'm not sure what quantity you need, but for my very small needs I
usually go to BG Micro: http://www.bgmicro.com
One they carry:
P/N: LCD1031 $5.95/each

Woops, sent before I meant too. They also have 24x2s for $3.95/each, but
they are EL backlight vs. the LED backlight of the 16x2.

There's a guy on Ebay (of all places) that sells decent 4x20 backlit
displays for $10 each!
Get on Ebay and search "LCD displays". He probably sells the 2x20 as
well. I can verify
that they work fine.

Martin,
Marlin P Jones and Associates have some 16x1 for $7.00 @ in quantity 10.
I have a few that are 16x2, and have an LED backlight. I think I gave
about $6.50 @ for them
a few years back. If you only need a few, I'll part with a few of mine
for what I gave for them.
Let me know.

Jim

OK.
Is it eBay as such? Or is it the *sellers* on eBay ?
I'd look up one on eBay that looks nice and then contact
the seller directly for a larger deal.

I think if you google "2x16 Character LCD" you will refine your search better as to what you are looking for.

Bob, not Martin.
Jan-Erik: Good idea on contacting the seller directly. I'd rather not deal with buying through eBay for production :)

Hi Martin-
I think CrystalFontz is a good source -- nice selection, new product and not a
bad price at 10 and above: http://www.crystalfontz.com
Or, for example: www.crystalfontz.com/cgi-bin/pricing.pl?product=1602a
for the 16x2.
Nice modules, too!

Martin,
Oooops, that first one got away on me too quick.
I have bought several displays from Ebay store Sure Electronics. 16X2
regular $1.99, with white with blue backlight #3.98. 24X2 regular or white
with red backlight $6.95, 20X4 white with blue backlight $8.93, graphics
displays also. And of course lots of other neat stuff. I have ordered from
them several times now, no problems.

I'd have to second buying electronics from Sure Electronics, in
general. Their stuff is well packaged/labeled, and he has always been
willing to negotiate on price when combining shipments (provided you
ask). Not as fast getting to me as the more local (in country) big
box electronics warehouses, but for the price and (so far) quality,
it's right on the mark.

I've bought quite a lot of stuff from them, and the white/blue LCDs are very good (and neat, without the overhanging PCB that some of them have) but a couple of
cautions: Sure Electronics often refuse to combine shipping, which means there's no economy of scale when buying from them - the price+shipping applies to each
item you buy. Secondly, I have had two occasions where they have sent a shipment short, so you have to check what you receive carefully. They have always
sent on the missing items when I've pointed out the error, but it's annoying to have it happen in the first place.
And coming from the Far East, shipping isn't fast! I'd guess an average of a week, but can be up to two weeks.

Not unusual. ebay take a cut of the selling price so artificially inflated
shipping means less money for ebay, more money for the seller and/or better
value for you.
Artificially inflated shipping also effectively increases the starting
price and ebay listing charges increase with starting price.
ebay are now "Clamping Down on Unfair Postage & Packaging Charges"
They say "We are introducing this change as a first step towards curbing
excessive postage and packaging charges on the site. These excessive
charges deter buyers from continuing to make their purchases on eBay, and
harm the success of the vast majority of good sellers on the site."
while they are actually clamping down because it hurts their bottom line.

Personally I'd rather pay what the shipping costs and what the item
costs. It was really ridiculous a few years ago on many discount sites
linked from pricewatch.com, for example. Something would cost $20 and
have $35 shipping.

I've seen much worse on eBay - $3 for the item, $20 shipping!
I'm not surprised that eBay are starting to "clamp down" on this, I'm rather surprised it's taken them so long!

I'm not. There's no clear way to automate it.
For example, paying $50 shipping for a $20 may be reasonable, it depends
what the $20 item is.
If it's a stick of computer memory then it's not reasonable, if it's a
really old and heavy non working OScope it might be.
It doesn't even have to be restricted to heavy items. Physically large
items can be quite expensive to ship, say something like a plastic body
panel for a car: it only weighs a few pounds, and may only be worth $20,
but it can be very expensive to ship since it's so large.
eBay SAYS they will clamp down on this, and I'm sure they will hit some
people, but I doubt there's any way to stop the practice without ticking
off alot of legitimate people.

Right.
I have personaly sold a lot using auctions on
eBay starting at $0.01 with shipping in the $8-10
range. Nothing funny with that, the shipping is actual
and they usualy ends at a way higher price anyway.
They have to check it case by case I guess...

Ebay is a huge database ripe for mining, so they can automate a lot of
it. Further, they've integrated UPS and Paypal in such a manner that
sellers get a discount on shipping if they use this system, which will
then provide Ebay with shipping weight and size.
But for the most part the best they can do is put a button on each
auction page that allows other ebay users to flag auctions for S&H
review. Get enough flags on an auction and an ebay person looks at
the listing.
Other sellers, who are hurt by this and have very good profiles, will
flag competitors and the problem will largely self stabilise. This
does require more overhead on ebay's part (they have to maintain an
internal listing of people who flag well, and those who flag badly so
they can discount bad flaggers).
But over time they can automate it using their customers.

They already have this in the 'star rating' system when providing feedback.
One of the questions is about S&H charges being reasonable.

I think the world is ready for an alternative to eBay. It just has to be
innovative enough to separate itself. People, especially sellers, are
really starting to hate eBay. I don't see how eBay justifies the fees
they charge, and the hassles they force upon sellers is ridiculous. Ever
try to get your fees back for an unpaid item? Two separate types of
hoops are put up, and their "free" relisting conditions are unworkable.
And the feedback system? Basically worthless, and they try to block
sites that attempt to make it work, like toolhaus.org
It's like Dilbert's boss runs eBay, with help from that cat from the
H.R. department and the weasel who writes the business plans.
Back on topic, if you want a consistent source of quality LCD displays
at a reasonable price, Crystalfontz is a good choice. You'll get LCDs
that meet spec and look great. If you just want to take potluck on a
small batch, All Electronics is good, but it's surplus so there's no
provenance.
Cheerful regards,
Bob

EBAY only will hear complaints from their POWER SELLERS. They due
several thousand dollars a month of business a month. If you are not
one of them you are wasting your time trying to file a complaint.

There already are alternatives, but they don't have the marketing nor
the numbers of users looking at your wares as eBay has. In fact many
have gone under trying to compete with eBay, so folks voted for eBay
with their wallets.
Craigslist is great for some stuff.
