I was wondering if it is possible to access the configuration bits (read) from t
he running code.
(Using 16f84 or 12c67x currently, although protecting code in a 16f84 is as much
protection as a "(c)" stamped on
the chip!!)
Basically I want to make a chip fail to function if I forget to set the protecti
on bits, better to fail and get stopped at
QC than have them go out unprotected.
(If this is not available.. Microchip: this might be a good thing to impliment)

According to Microchip data, the only time these bits are accessible is
during programming.  I just ran into this because I was trying to set up
the PIC for a crystal timer (the program defaults to RC) and the book
that I was using didn't cover how to access these bits for programming.

When you program the chip, you can add a couple of RETLW's with the
constents of the configurations bits.  This will let the program check
what config bits were programed.

Why is this necessary?  Are you expecting to use more than one
configuration for the same program? (I'm sure there is an excellent
reason for this, and I am interested in what the application is.)
