I have tried to use the PICSTART PLUS in this way and had success on some
boards, but failure on a PIC 12C508 board. The board had a large capacitor
between VCC and GND, and the PICSTART program does not wait long enough after
applying power before it begins to talk to the device, so it would fail. I had
to buy a more powerful programmer to do the job. I wrote and asked if
MicroChip could alter the program so that it would wait for power supply
ramp-up, but they refused. In circuits where the PIC is powered by the circuit
already, my PICSTART PLUS with about 8" wires over to the target board has
worked very well with 16F873s and 16F876s - many hundreds of them in fact.
