Windows XP

NETBEUI is available for XP. Look on the XP CD under Valueadd\MSFT\Net\NetBEUI and copy the nbf.sys to system32/Drivers and the netnbf.inf to the inf folder (a hidden folder under windows root). The new protocol will appear under connection properties / install / protocals.

Connect to VPN (Virtual Private Network)^:

To VPN in Windows XP mode inside Windows 7: You must change the networking from NAT to the name of your Ethernet card. Open XP mode, click Tools on the menu bar -> Settings -> Networking, in the right pane, choose the correct Adapter. After that, restart the XP Mode ^

A Windows XP computer that is part of a domain but not always connected (road warriors laptop) may need to sync time outside the network. The instructions at:
https://support.microsoft.com/kb/314054/en-us show how to do this, but are totally wrong about setting the NtpServer Parameter to "Peers". Instead, you need to specify a real NTP server. time-a.nist.gov seems to work (as of 2013), but the full list is at:
http://tf.nist.gov/tf-cgi/servers.cgi

Mouse "freezes" for a second every 10 seconds or so. Task Manager shows "System" is going to 100% CPU and back to 0 on the same cycle. From 0 to 100 and back, over and over. The Performance tab shows almost a sine wave from top to bottom. Make sure there are no print jobs waiting in queue. Seen with an HP 3005 using Universal Printing PCL6 driver for a USB printer that is disconnected but shared and /not/ set to "Use offline". Clearing the queue solves the problem. Setting the printer to offline prevents recurrence.
