Questions:
This is a pretty basic question and my kit doesn't explain how to do this... I am new to electronics and have built my first breadboard project that's a simple LED flasher.
I guess I buy that green board from radio shack but how do I make the the actual circuit? or is it in the board already? How do I take my design and move it and the components to a real circuit board.
James Newton replies: At that level, any means that results in an electrical connection between the components that need to be connected, and provides good insulation between the compoent leads that are NOT to be connected is acceptable. You can directly solder one component lead to another (google for "BEAM robotics" for examples of this) or use wirewrap or even make your own PCB... but you are also correct that you can buy a PCB with conductors in the same place as the breadboard and solder the components in the same places on that.+
Probably a simple question ... How the heck do I breadboard a circuit that uses surface-mount chips? Do I have to solder the chip to a pc board and put the board in the prototype?+
James Newton Answers:
Good question and your fear must be confirmed...+There are sockets for SMT chips, but generally, the sockets are more trouble than they are worth; the pinout of the socket is usually just as bad as the pins on the SMT chip. In either case, you end up soldering something to an adapter PCB and then prototyping from that.
Search the internet for Surface Mount AND surfboard or see adapters.com if you are rich. If you end up makeing your own prototype adapter, please share the design to save others the work... or make extra and sell them!
