In Japan when the car stopped with the intersection at night the head lamp is turned off. Although this is the custom of Japan it might depend on the culture.
I think that it was started as the person who crosses the intersection or the person who drive the car stopping at opposite side of the intersection is not dazzling.
Purpose is conceivable various. However, it is a little bothersome action.

I am using the automatic car. ( the gear of the car that is changed automatically by the car speed or the condition of the car ) Also, the device that carries out on/off of the head lamp automatically with the brightness of the surroundings is being used. ( called 'IC Con-Light' )
The lamp switch does not need to turn on manually when the car enter to the dark place like a tunnel etc. It is convenient.
It is not 'IC Con-Light' to introduce here. When it is using 'IC Con-Light', turn on/off of the lamp is controlled with the operation of the shifting lever.
When the 'IC Con-Light' is operating, the head lamp is turned off by the position of the shifting lever with P(parking), R(reverse) or N(neutral). When the position of the shifting lever is D(drive), 2(second) or L(low) the lamp is lighted.
When the momentary stop is done with the intersection I make the shifting lever position to N(neutral) range. At this time, the head lamp is turned off automatically.

This circuit causes the operation only when the head lamp is lighted by 'IC Con-Light'. Because, in the case of operation by the usual lamp switch( combination swtch ), it is to do as the head lamp is lighted even the position of the shifting lever is P,R or N range.
